making a 3D Cake At Home

making a 3D Cake At Home

Making a 3D cake at home can be as straightforward or complicated as you like. For my daughter's birthday, she wanted a dinosaur cake, and I didn't think the straightforward pan cake with a photograph or figurines would do. I researched separate cake styles, pans, ideas and came up with building my own cake.

Using straightforward box cake mix, with a few tweaks to make it stand up to a lot of icing and a minute imagination, I was able to come up with a real hit for her birthday celebration. It all comes down to cutting basic round cake layers and I make a rectangle pan cake and have found that the small egg shaped pan works very well to add some shaping to the cake for legs, facial features etc. A crumb coat layer is important in building the cake and using the icing to stick the layers together.

Banana Cake

I for real get something to look at for the shape like a toy or photograph for inspiration and draw out a sketch of how I am going to use the cut pieces and put them together on my cake board. I then for real put the pieces together and move them colse to until I get exactly the scale and shape that I want.

When that is done, glue them together with the icing and get ready to frost, which is the most time intriguing aspect. Using a basic butter cream frosting recipe, frosting bag and basic tips (star tip and round tip), color gels for coloring and a lot of patience you can bring your shape to life. There are many resources online for inspiration and help.

Chocolate Brownies - Five Facts About Brownies You Didn't Know

Chocolate Brownies - Five Facts About Brownies You Didn't Know

Five quick facts below to make your mouth water.

1.    The first time that a the name 'brownie' appeared in a recipe book was in the 1896 version of the Boston Cooking School Cook Book by Fannie Meritt Farmer. This brownie was in reference to tiny cake like versions, not a true brownie like you would find today.

Chocolate Cake Recipe

2.    It was pretty quiet in the world of brownies after that - it took roughly 11 years for a real brownie recipe to appear, also in the Boston Cooking School Cook Book, which was the first time a brownie was we know it today was published.  I'm not sure if it had colour pictures in, or referred to using organic or fair-trade chocolate, but it was authentically a groundbreaking recipe.

3.      One of the most favorite stories about the origin of the brownie is told in the Encyclopedia or American Food and Drink, which reports that a housewife in Bangor, Maine forgot to add baking powder to her brownie, and therefore her batch didn't' rise properly.   Ever the impeccable host, she carried on and sliced her now invented brownie and served it unashamedly, claiming her new invention

4.    Chocolate brownies are one of the few foods where there is a strong divide in the middle of the way a brownie should be prepared.   Half of the world loves a cake like brownie, whilst the other half would die without a beautiful fudge brownie to devour.

5.    I personally love chocolate fudge brownies, infinitely more than cake versions.

So there you go, just a few facts on Chocolate Brownies for you. Now go and eat some!

Easy method to Try: Black Sambo

Easy method to Try: Black Sambo

Black Sambo was one of the first recipes I learned from my mum when I started my catering business back in 2006. When I introduced it to my friends, every person were quite amazed with how extraordinary it tasted. Today, it is one of the most ordered desert by my regular customers. Black Sambo is a two layered gelatin made of creamy milk and Chocolate. As I was browsing in the Internet, I came across some roughly the same recipes that made me want to share my own. I have invested in some plastic molders circular in shape that makes the Sambo so much prettier when presented.

First Layer:

Chocolate Cake Recipe

1/2 cup of Boiling Water
1 can Nestle Cream
1 can Condensed Milk (big)
2 envelopes Knox Gelatin (unflavored)

Mix preserve milk and Nestle Cream together until smooth

Dissolve gelatin in Boiling water, let it cool and strain.

Combine it together with the milk mixture. Chill in the refrigerator.

Second Layer:

1/2 cup Boiling Water
1/2 cup Hershey Chocolate powder
1 can Evaporated Milk (big)
3/4 cup Refined Sugar
2 envelopes Knox Gelatin (unflavored)

Combine sugar and chocolate powder together with the evaporated milk.

Mix well until smooth.

Dissolve gelatin in water then combine it with the milk mixture.

Once the first layer is roughly firm, put in the second layer slowly; let it chill. Note: It is best not to wait too long to put in the second layer so that both layers will stick to each other when you serve it.

This recipe is so easy to do-everyone should try it! You can serve it topped with Hershey Chocolate syrup or shredded chocolate but others prefer it as it is.

Torte and fill the dome cake. Using green tinted buttercream, ice the round cake. Before the icing crusts, place the dome on top and ice it.

Give the leprechaun's hat a wide band that you create with chocolate buttercream or a ribbon of chocolate fondant. To pipe the hatband, you can use a strip of evenly cut paper to create an imprint, and then, using a star tip, fill in the band.

Next, pipe a gold buckle (with orange-yellow icing) onto the hatband. For a magical touch, apply edible gold glitter to the buckle.

Note: While edible gold glitter isn't cheap, you can find some good deals online. Large craft stores such as Michael's may also carry this.

Then pipe a large shamrock onto the hat. If you'd rather not do this freehand, make an imprint by pressing lightly onto the icing with a shamrock cookie cutter. Then using a start tip and dark green icing, fill in the shamrock. For an extra festive touch, serve with Irish Coffee.

Here's what one reader had to say about our "Cake Decorating Made Easy!" Video Books:

First Birthday Cakes - 7 Tips For A Killer Cake

First Birthday Cakes - 7 Tips For A Killer Cake

First birthday cakes are often the most stressful part of
planning a baby's first birthday. Many new mothers want
something special and memorable, yet easy to prepare.

The question is they're just not sure where to start. Should
you pick a cartoon character or an animal? Is a rectangle
one better, or should you go round? Well, fear not. Here are 7 easy first birthday cake tips
that will help you make the exquisite cake.

Cake Ideas

1. Make It Kid Approved -

The first thing to keep in mind
is that you need to make the cake with the kids in mind.
Ok, so this may seem like a no-brainer, but reconsider what a
kid likes in a birthday cake.

Gooey and sticky are all the time winners. Piquant colored icing is
a must. Also, keep in mind that your new baby will likely be
eating it with their hands, so something spongy will help
make it finger-friendly.

2. Make It Look Like It Can Move -

Chances are your little
one will never remember this cake. But you can make it one
they identify and enjoy. But one-year-olds are learning
about shapes and movement. reconsider decorating it with cars
or trains. Use big shapes.

3. Go Easy On The Sugar -

Your baby, as you know can have
a sensitive stomach at times. By making their cake with
less sugar, you can make sure their itsybitsy tummy plays
along. One easy way to do this is to use whipped cream
instead of icing. It's easier to spread, too.

4. Two Is good Than One -

With a first birthday [], the mess is confident and
frankly, your baby is more likely to treat their cake like
modeling clay rather than food. But you have the guests to
consider too. So, try making two cakes, a larger one for
the guests, a small one for your baby to smash. That way
everyone gets cake and a video-opp too.

5. Use A Thin Layer Of Icing First -

Icing the cake can
make you want to cuss (bite your tongue, though). It never
seems to fail that chunks of cake get ripped off while
spreading the knife.

Two things you can do: one let the cake cool all the way.
And second, spread a real thin layer of icing first and let
it sit. This will make the second, real layer much easier to
spread. Plus it's easier to camouflage places where the cake
has peeled off.

6. Draw On It -

When cutting your sheet cake into a shape,
use icing to draw on it first. This will ensure you have
the shape you want before cutting. Plus the icing tastes
better than an ink pen (that was bad, I know).

7. Make Your Cake whole 1 -

And finally, here's an easy
way to cut your cake into the shape of a one. First, take
your sheet cake and cut it down the middle long ways. Use
one of these halves to make the "foot" and "upper lip" of
the 1. The other half will be the main body of the 1.

To do that simply cut the prime half at the 1/3 mark.
Take the 2/3's piece and place it at the bottom of the first
long piece. That's your foot. Then take the 1/3 piece, cut
it once from angle to corner, making a triangle, and use
one of these as the "upper lip." That's it. Oh, and snack on
the leftover piece.

There you go. First birthday cakes don't have to be the
Booga Bears. With some straightforward techniques, you can pull off
a winner very easily.

Who Invented Ice Cream?

Who Invented Ice Cream?

Unlike pottery, arrow heads and metal tools, traces of antique ice creams are not no ifs ands or buts something that archaeologists can unravel. The ice cream history is therefore elusive and not very well known. People living in climates where ice and snow formed naturally are believed to have enjoyed a form of sorbet since prehistoric time by flavouring snow with fruit, berries and honey. This was probably especially beloved in warm regions with high mountains, since snow could be gathered from the high altitudes and brought down to regions where it in case, granted much sought after relief from the heat.

Even though ice cream itself leaves no descriptive mark in antique history, items and buildings used for its creation can. Icehouses are for instance known to have existed as early as 2,000 years B.C. In Mesopotamia. Wealthy Mesopotamians had them built along the River Euphrates and used them to store food. We also know from historical sources that any Egyptian pharaohs ordered ice to be shipped to them in the hot and sunny regions in which they lived.

Once of the earliest known instances of true sorbet - not only ice and ice houses - are the honey and fruit flavoured snow cones that you could buy in Athenian markets while the 5th century Bc. Later on, the Romans adopted a lot of Greek traditions, ice cream eating included. The Roman emperor Nero who reigned from 54 to 68 Ad did for instance have ice movable to Rome from the mountains and mixed with fruit and toppings.

In 400 B.C. The Persians invented a cool pudding made from vermicelli and rosewater. This chilled treat tastes a bit like a blend of sorbet and rice pudding, and was often mixed with fruits and saffron. Ice was quite facilely ready to wealthy Persians since they owned so called yakhchals; naturally cooled refrigerators in which ice collected from the mountains could be stored for longer periods of time.

The Arabs play an important role in the history of ice cream since they began using sugar and syrup instead of honey. In the 10th century B.C., sweet ice cream flavoured with fruits and nuts could be purchased in all major Arab cities. The Arabs also began adding milk to the ice-cream, production it more similar to the type of diary based ice-cream that is most unabridged today.

It has been hard to settle when the Chinese began enjoy Chinese ice cream, but the first type of Chinese ice cream is believed to have been flavoured with sugar and sold while the warm summer season. Most historians agree that the upper class enjoyed ice-creamed flavoured with fruit juices while the Song Dynasty (960-1279 B.C.) according to "History of food" by Toussaint-Samat the Chinese may even have created a extra ice-cream creation recipe earlier than the Song Dynasty. This recipe involved pouring snow and saltpetre over containers filled with syrup. Salt will lower the frozen point of water to subzero. Diary products are still rare in Chinese food, but according to legend Mongols introduced the convention of drinking milk to the Chinese while the Yuan Dynasty and this eventually led to the invention of milky ice-cream.

Instead of round cupcakes, you can also make quadrate or rectangular ones, and decorate each with colored frosting to make them look like tiny gift boxes. This cake idea can be used for any party theme.

Bake agreeing to the instructions until very lightly golden brown across the whole cookie. You do not want dark brown or it will be hard and crunchy. Still, make sure you cook all the way or else it will just be gooey dough instead of soft cookie and gooey chocolate.

Christmas evening meal Traditions and dessert Ideas

Christmas evening meal Traditions and dessert Ideas

Christmas is my family's favorite time of year. We have many Christmas traditions that we've developed over the years.  One is that each year one of us daughters (mother and sister-in-laws) is responsible for a part of the dinner.  My favorite part to make is the Christmas desserts.

Our house is large, there are five sisters, four brothers and both parents still living. We also have a lot of wives, husbands, nieces and nephews mixed in. When we get together there are twenty seven people.  Each year one of us cooks for a distinct segment. We put the dinner segments in a hat. After dinner, after all the dishes are done and we're relaxing we choose what our dishes will be for the next year. The menu is broken up into appetizers, before and after dinner drinks (for the adults), meat, stuffing/potatoes (starch), vegetables, rolls, desserts. Two citizen are responsible for meat, two for stuffing/potatoes and two for vegetables. One for appetizers, one for before and after dinner drinks and one for desserts. And, now that there are ten of us every year one lucky girl gets a get out of jail free card, which means she doesn't have to cook the next year!

Cake Recipes

As I said earlier Christmas dessert is my favorite. I start cooking about a week in advance. I know everybody's favorites, and like to add a few new things.  I like to make lots of distinct types of desserts for the family. One of my favorites is Black lowest Cup Cakes. Someone else is Greek Almond Cookies. These are super simple. Someone else favorite is absolutely a Red Velvet Cake with Butter Cream Icing. It's my Grandmother's recipe and the house loves it. The Red Velvet Cake is the one thing we're guaranteed to have every year, regardless of who is assigned dessert duty.

I also make a Cinnamon Crumb Cake, a Chocolate Truffle with Raspberry Sauce and a Louisiana Roasted Pecan Pie.  All of these things make quite an impressive seeing Christmas dessert buffet and everybody is able to find something that they really like.

Over the years we girls have shared recipes between us.  We all love cooking, us sisters were all raised to enjoy being in the kitchen.  When a new item is introduced to the table there is also a menu card for each sister for that new item.  When I added Greek Almond Cookies to the dessert table last year everybody was amazed how easy the recipe is. I got it from an actual Greek friend, Valerie.  The Cinnamon Crumb Cake is also easy to make and goes really well with a cup of coffee after dinner.

One year when my sister-in-law picked the Christmas dessert measure of our meal I gave her a lot of advice on recipes as she really isn't comfortable baking. I went to her home two days before Christmas and helped her make the traditional Red Velvet Cake. She did it really well and is now a pro!

Perhaps if you have a large house you can do something like our house does. We all enjoy our Christmas cooking tradition.

Cupcake Ideas

Cupcakes have been colse to for a long time, and in general on the past be used as a fun thing for parents and child to make together, but now they are a versatile food that can be used in many dissimilar occasions. From weddings to birthday parties the cupcake provides a relatively simple (to make) base for some absorbing variations.

Here are a few ideas.

Cake Ideas

Cupcakes can be used for wedding cakes. Couples are using wedding cupcakes to replace the customary wedding cake. A glass shelving buildings is used to build the cupcakes into a 'wedding cake shape'. The great things about this is that each guest can get their own personel cake. The down side is depending on how detailed each cake is detailed, it can be very time absorbing to decorate each - however, for that extra day, we think that it s worth the effort!

Cowboy and Indians themed birthday party. As a large batch of plain cupcakes can be of course made, it is relatively easy to then split them into some batches and then ice them differently to reflect those that are dressed as cowboys and those that are dressed as Indians. In addition to this, this is a great tactic if you and your friends are watching a big sporting event with two rival teams - the cupcakes can reflect the team colours!

Sports cupcakes. I have previously made salutary cupcakes where I have included, raisins, banana and nuts to provide an power boosting pre-sports snack. The great thing about these was that cupcakes are easy to store and vehicle so they can of course be taken to the actual event.

As you can seen, the humble cupcake base as many applications, and of course is only slight by your imagination. Have fun with them and experiment, they are fairly cheap to make so it is not he end of the world if a batch doesn't quite work out and has to end up in the bin!

Instruction to make Nian Gao:

1. Pour the brown sugar and water into a small saucepan, bring it to slow boil. When it starts to boil, lower the heat and simmer for about 5 to 6 minutes until all the sugar has dissolved. Then allow it to cool to slightly warm temperature.

3. Couple the glutinous rice flour with the oil, water and mixture (2) in a large bowl. Work straight through the batter well. It will turn very sticky and thick. Spend as much time as inherent to knead and work the mixture to a uniform consistency.

4. Use a 250 mm round tin cake or a round soufflé bowl of similar diameter. Oil the sides of the cake tin or bowl with some vegetable oil. Pour the batter into the cake tin or bowl. If you are very new to studying how to decorate a cake, the most uncomplicated thing you can do is purchase an uncostly cake decorating kit for a particular "theme." By "theme" we mean something like "baby shower cake kit," or similar term. Cake decorating kits exist for many favorite television characters. There are also theme kits such as "pirate cake kit" or "castle cake kit" as well.

As a beginner, you can also find cake decoration supplies and kits made up especially for you! For example, there are celebrated cake decoration supplies and kits for less than .

A "Round" tip, size 3 or 4, will be used to write on the cake. Also recommended is a #18 "Star" tip, a #352 "Leaf" tip, and a #102 or #104 "Petal Ruffle" tip. These tips are the ones that will help you make those wee flowers, leaves, and other shapes!

2. Gain the other vital equipment such as your mixer, mixing bowls, flat spatulas (we'll show you a source where you can see what these look like shortly), some icing gels (for coloring your icing), and the basic ingredients for your icing. Your basic buttercream frosting or icing will not take complex ingredients! If you have confectioner's (powdered) sugar, butter, shortening, clear vanilla extract, and a wee milk or water, you are ready to begin!

(Here's a quick note on why you need "clear" vanilla extract, which you can find in any craft or decorating aisle of the grocery store: If you use the usual "brown" colored vanilla extract, the brown color will tint your icing, giving it a "muddy" colored look. When you add your icing colors, it's best to add them to a pure white icing base. Using clear vanilla excerpt will help give you that involving white color.)

3. Watch a couple of beginner videos, many of which are now free and easy to find on the internet before you begin. Just watching some of these techniques will help you gain belief in trying them yourself. For example, you can watch one of the videos that show a professional manufacture a classic buttercream frosting. Then, you can try manufacture the frosting yourself and cover a uncomplicated cake or batch of cupcakes just to get started and to get the feel of how the spatulas and frosting will feel.

4. Take a look at the some of the easy start cake decoration supplies and kits for beginners. As mentioned, you can pick out an thorough starter kit for very wee money. You might even find something at a thrift store or yard sale if you keep your eyes open! If you know someone in your neighborhood who is an avid baker, you may even be able to borrow some cake decoration supplies just to see how they feel before you spend in your own.

5. You can join an online cake decorating community and forum and get scholar advice and learn from professionals who not only post instructional videos on a regular basis, but who are available to reply questions. Cake decorating communities can help you conclude what you may have done wrong when that wee stripe you put on the side of the cake fell off, or offer suggestions if you show them a photo of your work. Online cake decoration communities are very helpful and the members take great enjoyment in helping others learn how to decorate a cake.

Finally, and this should probably be step whole 6, but just do it! Bake a uncomplicated layer cake. Even use an easy mix to bake it, or a batch of cupcakes, and then just fill up one of the icing bags with some frosting (you can even buy some pre-made frosting at the grocery store for starters), and allow yourself to draw lines and figures on the cake or cupcakes.

It unquestionably all comes down to just taking the steps to get started, doesn't it? You'll have fun, and your friends and house will also enjoy your results!
